Finding The Best Snorkel Gear

By Andrea Davidson

Individuals who plan to go snorkeling may be looking for the best snorkel gear. This activity involves swimming through or on a body of water. People who do this are equipped with a diving mask that has a shaped tube called a snorkel, and fins for the feet. In cool waters, wetsuits may be worn. Use of this gear allows the swimmer to observe attractions underwater for long periods of time with little effort.

This is a common recreational activity, especially at tropical resorts and scuba diving places. The main appeal is the ability to observe the underwater life naturally, without needing complicated training or equipment that is required of scuba divers. It is appealing to people of all ages because it requires very little effort and work.

Scuba divers might also do snorkeling when they are on the surface. Search and rescue teams have been known to do this for water searches. This is also employed for athletes who participate in underwater versions of sports, such as hockey, spearfishing and rugby. This activity is thought to be centuries old, as Aristotle mentions a similar practice in a written work.

Not very much equipment is needed to do this activity. Still, one of the major pieces requires is, of course, the snorkel. These units are tubes that typically have a inside diameter that is between 1 and 3 centimeters, and a length of 30 centimeters. Most are shaped like a J or an L, and include a rubber or plastic mouthpiece at their lower end.

The purpose of the snorkel is to allow for breathing air from above the surface of water when the mouth and nose of the wearer are submerged under the water. Usually these include a piece of rubber that can be used to attach the piece to the outside of a diving mask. The optimum length for these tubes is approximately 40 centimeters or 16 inches. Longer tubes do not allow for breathing when going deeper, as the lungs are not strong enough to operate in deeper waters against the higher pressure.

The dive mask is another important piece of gear. These are worn the same way as masks used by scuba divers. They allow the user to see clearly while looking underwater. These pieces are known to range in size, style and shape. Typically these are made from rubber or silicone. Fins are usually worn over the feet, to help with swimming, but are not required. This is also true of wet suits.

A lot of places that sell this gear have trained staff who can help people locate what items work for them. Facilities that offer snorkeling classes or sessions usually have rental equipment available. Before snorkeling, people will be given information regarding how to properly use the gear and other safety precautions. Generally, this activity is not ideal for people who are uncomfortable when it comes to swimming, unless snorkeling is done in very shallow waters.

The best snorkel gear will vary by person, but is should fit properly and be used correctly. Unlike scuba diving, not much equipment or training goes into this activity. The two main pieces required of snorkelers: diving mask and snorkel. A wetsuit and fins are optional pieces that some choose to use for comfort and convenience purposes.
